This volume presents theoretical developments, applications and computational methods for the analysis and modeling in behavioral and social sciences where data are usually complex to explore and investigate. The challenging proposals provide a connection between statistical methodology and the social domain with particular attention to computational issues in order to effectively address complicated data analysis problems.
The papers in this volume stem from contributions initially presented at the joint international meeting JCS-CLADAG held in Anacapri (Italy) where the Japanese Classification Society and the Classification and Data Analysis Group of the Italian Statistical Society had a stimulating scientific discussion and exchange.
This book offers a broad selection of statistical applications to everyday situations, illustrating how exciting and diverse statistical analysis can be. It covers a wide variety of topics, including offering hearing-impaired people the option to enjoy music, extracting meaningful quantitative data from texts, and modeling flood disasters to help get a better grip on them. Most of the examples are not typically found in textbooks but directly relate to real-life problems encountered by the "average person", including topics relevant for sustainable development.
Technical jargon and formalism have been avoided as much as possible, and a detailed statistical background is not assumed of the reader, making the book accessible to anyone interested in current research in statistical applications. Providing an unobscured look at a thoroughly fascinating science, it will help students to develop enthusiasm for statistical issues and methods, and may even inspire ideas for their own projects.
Dieser Sammelband zeigt an ausgewählten Beispielen, wie spannend und vielfältig statistische Forschung sein kann. Ob es nun darum geht, hrgeschädigten Menschen einen guten Musikgenuss zu verschaffen, aus Texten sinnvolle quantitative Daten zu extrahieren oder Überschwemmungskatastrophen zu modellieren und damit besser in den Griff zu bekommen die meisten in diesem Buch dargestellten Erkenntnisse sind nicht in Lehrbüchern zu finden, sie stammen direkt von der Forschungsfront und laden zum Staunen und Entdecken ein.
Auf Fachjargon und Formalismus wird bei der Darstellung so weit wie mglich verzichtet das Buch richtet sich somit an jeden, der sich für das aktuelle Forschungsgeschehen im Bereich statistischer Anwendungen interessiert. Es ermglicht einen unverdeckten Blick auf eine durch und durch faszinierende Wissenschaft ohne dass die einzelnen Analysen bis ins Detail nachvollzogen werden müssen. Studierenden kann das Buch helfen, Begeisterung für statistische Fragestellungen und Methoden zu entwickeln, oder sogar Anregungen für die eigene Laufbahn geben.
Ein Großteil der Beiträge entstand an der Fakultät Statistik der TU Dortmund, der einzigen eigenständigen Statistik-Fakultät im ganzen deutschen Sprachgebiet, sowie darüber hinaus im Rahmen von an diese Fakultät angedockten DFG-Sonderforschungsbereichen.
