« Nello et Patrache » est l'histoire émouvante d'un pauvre orphelin qui se lie d'amitié avec un chien abandonné, Patrache. Ils habitent à la campagne avec le grand-père de Nello, aux alentours d'Anvers, à Hoboken. Tous les jours, le garçon et son chien partent en ville pour vendre du lait et ainsi gagner un peu d'argent. À chaque fois qu'il passe près de la cathédrale, Nello rêve de pouvoir admirer les tableaux de Rubens. Cependant, la visite est payante et il a à peine de quoi survivre. Le jeune Nello n'a pas beaucoup de chance dans la vie. Il passe de mésaventure en mésaventure et quand son grand-père décède, il ne lui reste plus que son chien.
L'histoire originale de Nello et Patrache a été écrite par l'Anglaise Marie-Louise de la Ramée (alias Ouida) en 1872, dans son roman « A Dog of Flanders ». La faim et l'insécurité qui régnaient alors y sont décrites de façon tellement réaliste que l'histoire a souvent été prise pour vraie. Nello est un garçon bon et courageux, qui ne se rend pas compte de la cruauté du monde. Ainsi, il est considéré comme un héros de la classe ouvrière, dans cette société du dix-neuvième siècle où l'écart entre riches et pauvres est énorme.
