Au début des années 1970, après des études de chimie et un doctorat, Patrick Moore s'engage avec quelques amis activistes dans la lutte contre les essais atmosphériques de la bombe H américaine. Equipés d'un simple bateau de pêche, ils parviennent, grâce à un sens aigu de la communication et à leur audace, à donner une audience médiatique exceptionnelle à leur cause. Ce fut l'acte de naissance de Greenpeace.
Devenu l'un des dirigeants principaux de la jeune organisation, Patrick Moore poursuit le combat contre les essais nucléaires mais lance aussi ses amis dans de nouvelles luttes, toujours non violentes, au nom du respect des animaux : contre la tuerie industrielle des baleines, contre le massacre des bébés phoques ou contre la pêche aux filets dérivants.
Mais au milieu des années 1980, il constate que les autres directeurs de l'ONG ont développé une vision de l'écologie radicalement différente de celle qui prévalait aux débuts : du souci de préserver l'existence des êtres humains dans la nature, avec la nature, ils étaient passés au soupçon, voire à la mise en accusation permanente de l'Homme. Ils avaient choisi de mener un combat politique, idéologique en laissant la science de côté. En 1986, Patrick Moore quitta donc Greenpeace pour s'investir dans des structures constructives, prêtes à aider au changement de façon rationnelle.
Dans ce livre passionnant, nourri d'expériences et de rencontres uniques, il montre pourquoi les écologistes radicaux actuels doivent revoir leurs certitudes car, sur de nombreux sujets qui leur sont chers (OGM, herbicides, chlore, nucléaire civil, sylviculture, énergies...), la science a montré qu'elle est un atout fantastique et non un ennemi.
