Les douze clefs de Philosophie de Frère Basile Valentin est un texte apparu en 1600 en Allemagne. La légende raconte que l'auteur, un moine bénédictin du XVème siècle, a caché cet écrit d'alchimie dans une pierre creuse d'une abbaye où il fut découvert plus de deux siècles plus tard... Malgré la charmante poésie de cette histoire, il apparait maintenant plus probable que le véritable auteur soit l'éditeur et alchimiste Johann Thlde et qu'il ait usé de cette ruse historique pour augmenter l'attractivité de son ouvrage. L'alchimiste Michael Maier a ajouté au texte douze énigmatiques gravures, une par clef, y cachant de nombreux symboles alchimiques. Elles nous permettent d'appréhender le message d'ordre spirituel et initiatique de la pierre philosophale.
