Ce livre est le premier d'une série de trois volumes consacrés aux Mangyans alangans de Siapo, un village situé sur l'île de Mindoro, aux Philippines. Les kuyay (les aînés), y présentent des aspects importants de leurs traditions mythologiques, en particulier la création du monde et celle des humains, mais aussi leurs savoirs sur des animaux, comme les oiseaux, les insectes et autres petites bestioles, les rampants, sans oublier leurs esprits-maîtres. Avec les ninunos, des êtres invisibles, les Mangyans se présentent comme les gardiens de la terre et en appellent discrètement à la préservation des environnements, convaincus du fait que l'humain n'est rien sans des solidarités interspécifiques. L'ouvrage comporte des informations recueillies en 2012 et lors de plusieurs ateliers de transmission des savoirs organisés avec eux en 2017, 2018 et 2019, et transcrites en alangan, en tagalog et en français. Le projet a bénéficié d'appuis financiers de la part : du Conseil de recherche en sciences humaines du Canada et, surtout, du Fonds National de la Recherche Scientifique (FNRS, Belgique ; F. 6002.17), et du projet PRD « Local Adaptation, Resilience & Interpretation of Socio-Natural Hazards, and Environment Management in the Philippines (2014-2019) ».
