This book reflects a harmonious relationship between the academic world and the European brewing industry. Despite the fact that they appear to be driven by divergent perspectives, they both agree that ignorance may lead to prejudice. Assumptions made about alcohol, and beer in particular, are often based on media coverage, cultural stereotypes and even myths, without any relevant in depth scientific analysis.
ERAB: The European Foundation for Alcohol Research (ERAB) is proud to provide a step forward to enhance the knowledge of the effects of beer and alcohol on the body and the brain as well as the analysis of the best strategies to reduce, in the short and long term, the possible damage induced by its use.
The beneficial effects of moderate alcohol consumption in terms of cardiovascular disease together with the detrimental effect in terms of cancer, lead to the assumption that consumption must be evaluated personally, taking into account the contextual environment, the global body state and the consensual pleasure arising from its consumption.
"In today's world, we seek to understand, through scientific inquiry, why people drink, why some drink more than others, and why some drink despite negative consequences.
Such scientific inquiries require the exploration of multiple spheres of influence ranging from genetic susceptibility to environmental risk within the context of prevailing socio-cultural norms. To this end, ERAB the European Foundation for Alcohol Research is an outstanding example of how the brewing industry and academia are working together to address these issues of mutual concern in contemporary European societies." Professor TK Li, Former Chairman of Scientific Advisory Council of ABMRF, Former Director of NIAAA, NIH.

This is the textbook for the master's course Combustion and Fuels that the author teaches at the Louvain School of Engineering of UCLouvain. The subjects contained herein are the following : origin and composition of fossil fuels, stoichiometry and thermochemistry of combustion, chemical kinetics, governing equations of reacting flows, laminar premixed flames and turbulent premixed flames. Emphasis is placed on the presentation and analysis of the basic concepts and physico-chemical mechanisms underpinning combustion. Further, particular attention has been paid to render these notes self-contained. A list of review questions and exercises has been included at the end of each chapter. This book is intended for master's or advanced undergraduate students in engineering, physics, chemistry or applied mathematics. It is assumed that the reader is familiar with the basic notions of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics.

Although seismic hazard in North-Western European countries like Belgium, Germany and the UK is lower than in countries as Italy, Greece and France, significant seismic events can occur and their direct effects on the building stock as well as the associated socio-economical impact could be important. This particular risk must therefore be carefully considered. An optimal balance between the effective risk and the cost of preventive measures has to be found.
This book contains contributions presented at the international colloquium "Seismic Risk 2008 - Earthquakes in North-Western Europe" organised in Liège on 11 and 12 September 2008 by the Belgian Seismic Group (BeSeiG). This colloquium provided a very interesting opportunity for seismologists, engineers and architects to discuss the specific problems in regions characterised by low to moderate seismic risks.
Graphical limit state analysis : application to statically indeterminate trusses, beams and masonry arches

The art of structural design requires specific methods and tools. One of those consists in modelling the structural behaviour through a network of straight bars, whether in compression (struts) or in tension (ties), and in expressing its static equilibrium through classic graphic statics reciprocal diagrams: a form diagram describing the geometry of a strut-and-tie network and a force diagram representing the vector equilibrium of its nodes. When it comes to statically indeterminate structures, the lower-bound theorem of Plasticity avoids any overestimation of the load bearing capacity, which allows the designer to select one of the possible equilibrium states. Considering that a limit state analysis of these indeterminate equilibriums can better support the design process when it shares the same graphical environment, the thesis consists in proposing a graphical methodology for constructing a parametric force diagram resulting from the combination of independent force diagrams. The stress distribution is then modified by manipulating the relative position of some vertices of the force diagram until it reaches limit states; hence, the possibility of identifying the collapse state and the corresponding load bearing capacity of various types of structures such as pin-jointed trusses, beams or masonry arches. The analysis of the admissible geometrical domains for these specific vertices allows a better understanding of the behaviour of statically indeterminate structures at limit state and may be helpful when designing them.
This CD-ROM contains the recordings (audio and slides) of a two days advanced course on "Traffic Control and QoS in IP Networks" given by Olivier Bonaventure in October 2000. The course was designed for network engineers from ISPs or router manufacturers. It assumes that the students already have a good knowledge of the TCP/IP protocol suite.
It covers the following advanced topics :
- Applications and their requirements - The TCP protocol and its congestion control mechanisms - Packet-level traffic control mechanisms (classification, queueing, shaping, policing, Random Early Detection, scheduling, Explicit Congestion Notification) - Flow-level traffic control mechanisms (RSVP, constrained routing) - Network-level traffic control mechanisms (policies, Common Open Policy Service, traffic engineering, fast restoration) - Standardised services (Integrated and Differentiated services) - Case studies The CD-ROM contains the audio recordings, the slides (in pdf and source format) and an extensive bibliography. It requires a web browser (Netscape/Internet Explorer) and the realaudio software that is freely available on the Internet. It has been tested on PCs running Windows 95/98/NT and requires a sound card.
