This volume presents and discusses the results of an extensive survey that took place between 2014 and 2018 in the mountain ranges of East Crete. The survey of respectively the eastern part of the Dikte range and the Sitanos area above Zakros specifically targeted prehistoric cultural remains with the aim to investigate the extent at which this environmental zone was exploited during the Neolithic period and the Bronze Age. Based on the results of the fieldwork, the discussion focuses mostly on the Neopalatial period (Middle Minoan III Late Minoan IB) during which a systematic effort to occupy and exploit these two upland zones was especially evident. The study of architectural remains and movable finds that were sampled, documented and studied within the two areas allows a reconsideration of issues of political organization, labour mobilization, economic integration, production and specialization.
The aim of this volume is to present an overview of current trends and individual methodological attempts towards arriving at an adequate understanding of Minoan, Cycladic, and Mycenaean iconography. In the archaeology of the Aegean Bronze Age our approaches and methods of analysing and interpreting pictorial images have changed throughout recent decades, and the questions we pose to the iconographic material have increased in complexity. As a consequence, the aim of this volume is to present an overview of current trends and individual methodological attempts towards arriving at an adequate understanding of Minoan, Cycladic, and Mycenaean iconography. Scholars active in this field of research have each contributed an article on a specific artistic object, an individual image, or a group of artefacts and their iconography, in order to illustrate the methodology they use in dealing with Aegean images and their wider context. The focus lies on the presentation of new, previously unpublished or neglected material from recent or old excavations, new reconstructions and interpretations of long-known artistic objects as well as superordinate pictorial subjects. The contributions focus on prominent artistic media such as seal images (on seals, signet-rings, and sealings) and mural paintings yet also include other artistic genera such as metal inlay work, relief images, pictorial pottery, and terracotta fi gurines. This collection of 18 case studies provides a representative crosssection that portrays up-to-date research on analysing and interpreting the iconography of the Aegean Bronze Age. This volume therefore makes visible current scholarly approaches and simultaneously provides new perspectives into Aegean iconography.
This collection of papers explores whether the Lévi-Straussian notion of the House is a valid concept in aiding the comprehension of the social structure of Bronze Age Aegean societies. The main question that is addressed is whether there was a specific social institution or definable group that, through its materialisation, differentiated itself from other social units, such as nuclear families. While little agreement was reached, the volume succeeds in stressing the advances made in the study of social structure of the Aegean on the basis of material remains. Moreover, the discussions presented demonstrate that the House as an analytical unit allows a better understanding of what on Crete has usually been called 'the elite' - an anonymous group of people with shared values and practices. It is the contention of the editors that such an interpretation of the basal social structure may help understand the unique emergence, development and character of Minoan society, as well as its distinctive material culture.Apart from a general introduction by Jan Driessen and Maria Relaki, the first part of the volume deals with Minoan Crete starting with Quentin Letesson & Jan Driessen presenting a diachronic overview of the House in Minoan society, and followed by papers that present case-studies of the Prepalatial (Simona Todaro; Yiannis Papadatos) and Neopalatial period (Dario Puglisi; Carl Knappett ; Emmanouela Apostolaki; Pietro Militello, Orazio Palio & Marianna Figuera ; Chrysa Sofi anou & Thomas Brogan ; Eleni Gerontakou, Maria Kyritsi & Alexandra Salichou). In addition, specialised studies deal with ritual practice (Christine Morris & Alan Peatfi eld), signet rings and seals (Sarah Finlayson; Anna Simandiraki-Grimshaw) and the political transformations after the destruction of the New Palaces (Eleni Hatzaki). The last part of the volume comprises two papers (Artemis Karnava & Irene Nikolakopoulou ; Evi Gorogianni) that address social structure on the islands of Santorini and Kea while papers by Stratos Nanoglou, Kalliopi Efkleidou and Maria Luisa Ruiz-Galvez present possibilities of application of the concept on Mainland Greece and elsewhere. In the last part of the volume, Maria Relaki presents a theoretical re-evaluation of the role of kinship in House Society studies.
They are qualified, experienced, motivated, academically accomplished. They work tirelessly, collecting invaluable data in the field under conditions that are always challenging, and at times dangerous. And yet, their voices are unheard, and their names go unacknowledged in published research. Such is the lot of far too many research assistants from the Global South - people upon whose work an entire industry of knowledge production has been built. They are shut out of discussions on project design and left in the dark about the modalities of research funding. Later, the results of their research are published in journals to which they often have no access. Much of this is due to a certain omertà surrounding power imbalances, as well as research assistants' working conditions, financial difficulties, psychological traumas, and vulnerabilities. It also stems from the persistence of colonial mentalities in the research world - within universities, governments, foundations, aid institutions, and NGO's. Most of them continue to live, sometimes transformed, through fairy tales, literature, movies and videogames. L'étude des mouvements sociaux dans les sciences sociales a pris un nouvel essor après les vagues de contestations révolutionnaires et les mouvements Occupy de notre décennie. L'intuition au départ de ce numéro thématique est que notre compréhension de ces mouvements est limitée par le caractère eurocentrique des catégories et concepts forgés pour les analyser. Il est par ailleurs incontestable que de nombreux mouvements sociaux importants aujourd'hui se développent d'abord au Sud avant de se globaliser. Les coordinateurs de ce numéro d'Émulations privilégient une approche des mouvements sociaux depuis le Sud et par des chercheurs du Sud. Ce changement d'optique est nécessaire pour comprendre, avec de nouveaux outils intellectuels, les dynamiques de ces mouvements qui dessinent notre avenir commun. This collection of papers explores whether a meaningful distinction can be made in the archaeological record between migrations in general and conflict-induced migration in particular and whether the concept of conflict-induced migration is at all relevant to understand the major societal collapse of Bronze Age societies in the Eastern Mediterranean in the late 13th c. BCE. Helped by modern perspectives on actual and recent cases of conflict-induced migration and by textual evidence on ancient events, the different areas of the Mediterranean affected by the Late Bronze Age events are explored.

Il fenomeno della fine delle ville, tra VI e IX sec. d.C., è un tema oggetto di studi ed aggiornamenti ormai da più di due decenni, in particolare nell'abito della pars Occidentalis dell'Impero romano. This is the textbook for the master's course Combustion and Fuels that the author teaches at the Louvain School of Engineering of UCLouvain. The subjects contained herein are the following : origin and composition of fossil fuels, stoichiometry and thermochemistry of combustion, chemical kinetics, governing equations of reacting flows, laminar premixed flames and turbulent premixed flames. Emphasis is placed on the presentation and analysis of the basic concepts and physico-chemical mechanisms underpinning combustion. Further, particular attention has been paid to render these notes self-contained. A list of review questions and exercises has been included at the end of each chapter. This book is intended for master's or advanced undergraduate students in engineering, physics, chemistry or applied mathematics. It is assumed that the reader is familiar with the basic notions of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics.
